The best AI skills assessment tools for hiring in 2026.
Eight tools for testing how well candidates work with AI, compared on what candidates do, which AI tool they use, who scores them and which roles they cover. We make Lemonsignal, so it is on the list and it is first. Everything about the other seven comes from their own websites, linked and dated.

How we picked these eight tools
We asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI answers for the best AI skills assessment tools in October 2026, and kept the tools that test how a candidate works with AI, not only what they know about it. For each one we read its own website and compared four things: what candidates do, which AI tool they use, who or what scores them, and which roles it covers. Each entry links the pages we read and the date we read them.
The eight AI skills assessment tools, one by one
- 1
Lemonsignal
OursBest forA real task in the AI tool the candidate already uses, for any role.
- What candidates do
- A real task from the job, such as a bug to fix, a launch to plan or a revenue drop to explain. One to three hours, with a deadline and no time limit.
- Which AI tool
- Their own: Claude Code, Codex, Claude Cowork or ChatGPT, on their own computer or in the browser. The whole conversation with the AI is recorded.
- Who or what scores
- Six AI skills: understand the task, brief the AI, check what it gives back, correct it, sign off, and make it repeatable. Each gets one of four levels, Weak, Partial, Solid or Strong, against a scoring sheet written before anyone takes the task. Every level links to the moment in the conversation it came from.
- Roles
- Engineering, product, design, marketing, data and finance.
- Pick it if
- You want to see how someone works with AI on work like the job, in their own tool, and you can give them an hour or more.
Ours. How we score
- 2
Codility

- What candidates do
- A business task done with an AI assistant next to the brief, ending in a finished deliverable. Tasks take about 20 to 60 minutes, and an assessment can combine several.
- Which AI tool
- The AI Assistant built into Codility. The conversation is saved to the candidate’s record.
- Who or what scores
- The deliverable is scored against an expert-defined answer space, with no generative AI in the grading, in Codility’s words.
- Roles
- Eight business functions, such as customer support, sales, product, marketing, data analysis and finance, alongside Codility’s engineering tests.
- Pick it if
- You hire into business roles at volume and want short, standard tasks scored the same way every time.

How to choose an AI skills assessment tool
Four questions that narrow the list quickly.
- 1Which roles are you hiring for? Some tools are built for developers and added AI later. If you hire marketers, analysts or finance people, check that the tasks are written for them.
- 2Do candidates use their own AI tool, or one built into the test?A built-in assistant is easier to compare. Their own tool shows how they really work, with the setup and habits they would bring to the job.
- 3How long can you ask candidates to spend?Fifteen minutes gives a signal on everyone. One to three hours on a real task shows much more, so it suits a shortlist.
- 4Can you see why each score was given?AI makes most finished work look good. The useful part is the conversation: what they asked, what they checked, and what they let through.

Questions about AI skills assessment tools
What is the best tool to test candidates’ AI skills?
It depends on the role and on how much time you can ask for. For a short check on many candidates, look at Bryq, TestGorilla or CodeSignal. For developers, HackerRank, CoderPad or Codility. To see how someone works with AI on a real task in their own tool, in any role, Lemonsignal.
Can candidates use ChatGPT or Claude in an assessment?
In some tools, yes. Canditech puts Claude, ChatGPT and Codex inside the test. Lemonsignal lets candidates use their own Claude Code, Codex, Claude Cowork or ChatGPT. Most others give a built-in AI assistant instead.
How do you test AI skills for non-technical roles?
Give a real task from the job, let candidates use an AI tool, and look at how they worked as well as what they handed in. Codility, CodeSignal, TestGorilla, Canditech, Bryq and Lemonsignal all cover non-technical roles.
Is this list neutral?
No list written by a vendor is. We make Lemonsignal, and we put it first. Everything about the other tools comes from their own websites, checked on the date given and linked, so you can check it.
